Overcoming Depression with Faith

Sometimes, we forget we are going through a spiritual battle, especially when, week after week, it feels as though nothing changes; instead, each day seems to bring additional burdens and challenges. The heaviness of depression seeps into our minds, creating a pervasive sense of hopelessness that drags us down into the abyss. Each morning, taking a deep breath feels laborious, and the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other becomes an uphill battle. Sometimes, life seems to drain the very strength from our bodies, leaving us breathless.

We begin to wonder how much longer we can endure this relentless struggle before we start to crack under the immense pressure of our circumstances. These difficulties manifest in various forms, such as mounting financial stress that leaves us anxious about making ends meet, persistent health issues that drain our energy and morale, or strained relationships that contribute to our sense of isolation and despair. Each of these problems weighs heavily on us, making it increasingly difficult to find a way forward.

Our house may seem to be blowing in the wind, with no life in our weary bones. We fall prostrate on the floor, our chest heaving, our tears swallowed by the carpet. Yet, we cry out, “God, please come with your help, for the ocean is beginning to swallow me up.” And when we feel we can’t hold on any longer, a ray of hope breaks through the clouds, reminding us that we are not alone in this storm. No matter how faint, this ray of hope is a beacon of light in our darkest moments, guiding us toward a brighter future.

The storms of life can upend our lives, but we possess the strength to weather them. When we feel we can’t endure another storm, we find the courage to seek help and declare, “I need you, God. I cannot do this alone.” This act of seeking help and guidance from God is not a sign of weakness but a testament to our strength and resilience. We can have absolute confidence He will help us in our time of need.

Once again, we can pick ourselves up from the bottom of the pit and face another day. This act of rising from the depths, of facing the challenges head-on, is a testament to our resilience and strength. It is a reminder that no matter how tough the journey, we have the power to keep moving forward.

When we wonder if God is with us, He reminds us that His word says, “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV)

The enemy will relentlessly challenge us with a series of battles that may come at us unexpectedly and with great intensity. On certain days, his attacks can feel overwhelming. However, we must stand firm and confront him boldly in the name of Jesus, declaring our unwavering faith. We must remind him, with conviction, that no matter the trials or temptations he throws our way, our God is supreme. Nothing that happens to us occurs without God’s knowledge and permission, affirming that we are under His divine protection.

Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God, that is for those who are called according to his purpose, all things are working together for good. (ISV)
